Barcelona's hotels are slowly catching on. There may still be no staff who speak decent English, but they've finally come around to opening up their fabulous terraces and rooftop bars to non-staying guests. We've picked one for each day and occasion, be it Club-sized (younger, party-ish), Queen-sized (stylish) or King-sized (ritzy).
CLUB-SIZED
Terraza Bar 8 at Hotel Granados 83.
Alright, not quite a party terrace, but the location just off Gayxample makes this tiny rooftop bar a nice, quieter alternative to Axel's Sky Bar.
Enric Granados 83, Eixample Esquerra. Mon-Sun 18-01 (Fri-Sat 02).
QUEEN-SIZED
La Terraza de Duquesa de Cardona.
The hotel isn't particularly noteworthy but the rooftop is, enjoying great views of the old port. Live music on Mondays and Sundays to bookend the week.
Passeig Colón 12, Gótico. Mon-Sun 12-01:30.
KING-SIZED
El Terrat del DO Plaça Reial.
From up here, the infamous plaça looks quite stunning, and with a full-service gourmet restaurant, just eat, drink and be merry on top of this luxe boutique hotel.
Plaça Reial 1, Gòtico. Mon-Sun 19-24.
CLUB-SIZED
360 at Barceló Raval.
A trendy spot in the midst of the happening, but still dodgy neighbourhood. Sweeping (360 degree) views of town and the occasional hipster knees-up.
Rambla del Raval 17, Raval. Mon-Sun 18-01 (Fri-Sun until 02).
QUEEN-SIZED
Alaire at Hotel Condes de Barcelona.
The hotel may be slightly underwhelming for a five-star property, but Alaire's live music sessions Sunday through Wednesday are just right.
Passeig de Gràcia 73, Eixample Esquerra. Mon-Sun 12-02.
KING-SIZED
Blue View at Casa Fuster.
Slightly pompous, this Bombay Sapphire-branded space does offer views of Barcelona's grandest boulevard spectacular enough to warrant a G&T.
Passeig de Gràcia 132, Gràcia. Mon-Sun 21-01.
CLUB-SIZED
Sky Bar at Axel Hotel.
The epicentre of gay action in summer, you'll always find boys on the prowl at the Sky Bar but it gets particularly busy Wednesday night and Sunday late afternoon.
Aribau 33, Eixample Esq. Wed-Sun 20:30-01:30.
QUEEN-SIZED
VISIT UP at Hotel Pulitzer.
A mixed, not unattractive crowd fill this place for its after-work session with live music on Wednesdays, and now offers late DJ sessions Thur-Fridays, too.
Bergara 8, Plaça Catalunya. Tue-Sun 18-24 (Thu-Sat until 02).
KING-SIZED
La Isabela at Hotel 1898.
Beware of the pick-pockets on the Ramblas on your way; you'll need your wallet for drinks & snacks at the pleasant rooftop that retains the hotel's clubby colonial-style feel.
La Rambla 109, Raval. Mon-Sun 19-23.

CLUB-SIZED
La Terraza de Hotel Villa Emilia.
Petite and intimate, there are live music sessions Thursday through Sunday and a snack menu from the BBQ if you feel peckish.
Calàbria 115-117, Eixample Esquerra. Mon-Sun 19:30-23:30.
QUEEN-SIZED
Skybar at Grand Hotel Central.
Possibly the most spectacular deck in the centre, with its infinity pool and close-up view of Barcelona's rooftops. Relatively reasonable prices only add to the allure.
Via Laietana 30, Born. Mon-Sun 20:30-01.
KING-SIZED
Terraza de Arola at Hotel Arts.
The outdoor space of the hotel restaurant from Michelin-starred Sergi Arola. Drinks, gourmet nibbles, and live music on Thursdays in front of Frank Gehry's fish.
Marina 19-21, Vila Olímpica. Wed-Sun.
CLUB-SIZED
Angels & Kings at ME Barcelona.
No views on offer from the pooldeck of ME, but it doubles up as a pleasant open air chill-out zone for the Angels & Kings nightclub.
Pere IV 272-286, Poble Nou. Mon-Sun 19-21 (club hours Tue-Sat 22-05)
QUEEN-SIZED
Terraza Chill-Out at OhLa.
Hotel OhLa may be a classic case of style over substance but when you're only there for drinks, then things like a gimmicky see-through pool are kinda fun.
Via Laietana 49, Gòtico. Mon-Sun 19-24.
KING-SIZED
La Terraza del Claris.
The classic al fresco meeting point in summer for the Barcelona establishment, with live music of the jazz and bossa nova variety Tues, Wed, Fri and Saturday nights.
Pau Claris 150, Eixample Dreta. Mon-Sun 11-02.

CLUB-SIZED
Pool deck at Silken Diagonal.
Set amidst the highrises of Diagonal Mar, the tenth floor pool deck feels very LA with DJs Thursday through Sunday - check the agenda for special parties, like Sònar events.
Diagonal 205, Poble Nou. Mon-Sun 12-02.
QUEEN-SIZED
Terraza de Hotel Omm.
Wallpaper*ish, like the rest of the hotel and the guests who stay there, with live music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights.
Roselló 265, Eixample Dreta. Mon-Sun 19-02.
KING-SIZED
Dolce Vita at Hotel Majestic.
It used to be a pretty dusty affair, but a little help from design maven Patricia Urquiola has helped transform the Majestic's terrace into a nice little urban oasis.
Passeig de Gràcia 68, Eixample Dreta. Mon-Sun 20-02.
